Our latest release is coming very soon!

We've been toiling away on these watches like mad scientists in a lab, and let me tell you, Timascus material is trickier than a cat on a hot tin roof! That heating process? It’s like playing with fire – literally! One wrong move and we might end up with a shapeshifting transformer instead of a watch. But fear not, we’ve tamed it just enough to adjust the bezel ball bearing system, ensuring that the bezel action is smoother than a buttered otter sliding down a rainbow.

As for the dimensions, we’ve got a case that’s 39 mm in diameter, 47 mm lug to lug, 20 mm lug size, and 11.5 mm tall (including the sapphire, which, let’s be honest, is basically the cherry on top).

On the bright side, our supplier came through for us, securing a splendid batch of cases, dials, crowns, and buckles. It’s like getting a surprise gift basket – but instead of fruit and cheese, it’s all fabulous watch components!

Now, let’s talk about the heart of this beauty – the mighty diver powered by the Japanese Miyota 9039. Yep, we heard your whispers, and this baby ticks at a whopping 28,800 beats per minute, with a power reserve longer than your Aunt Gertrude's holiday stories and 24 jewels (which are way more useful than your average piece of costume jewelry).

Next up, the hands. We’ve given them an angle cut and raised the center to strut their stuff with dazzling light play on the dial – it’s basically a watch party! And when the lights go out, don’t fret – we’ve armed it with Japanese Nemoto lume because who doesn’t want their watch to glow like a firefly in July?

The Lume Lie: Unmasking the Truth About "Grade X1 BGW-9"

Ever noticed a lot of watch brands suddenly touting "BGW-9 Grade X1" lume? We did too, and it got us curious. So, being the nosy (and quality-obsessed) folks we are at Wicked Watch, we decided to dig a little deeper.

Our first stop? Some suppliers in China's Guangdong province, the main hub for watch production in the world. To our surprise, a few of them claimed they could indeed produce this elusive "X1 grade" BGW-9. Interesting, right?

Armed with this intel, we went straight to the source: RC Tritec AG, the Swiss manufacturer of Super-LumiNova . Their response was enlightening, to say the least: Swiss Super-LumiNova BGW-9 Grade X1 is not available and cannot be produced. Only Standard and Grade A versions exist for this specific pigment.

The Unfortunate Reality of Lume Claims

This kind of deception from some suppliers in China is, unfortunately, all too common. They'll sell you lume pigments under false pretenses, claiming they're Swiss Super-LumiNova, or grades that simply don't exist, or even passing off Japanese or Chinese lume as Swiss.

Why the widespread dishonesty? According to some of our contacts in China, the "BGW-9" sold by many factories there costs around CHF 8.88 (CNY 80.00) per gram. Compare that to genuine Swiss Super-LumiNova, which starts at CHF 47.50 (CNY 427.50) per gram. That's a massive difference, and it paints a pretty clear picture of the motivation behind these misleading claims.

Of course, not all Chinese suppliers operate this way, but a significant portion do. It's a tricky landscape to navigate if you're not vigilant. New upgrades for our PEARL DIVER!

After some time, we are ready to introduce the new series of our bronze PEARL DIVER.

New Dials available

Starting with the purple crystalized titanium, new improved phoenix dial (forged carbon with gold dust) and a next generation full lume dial.

Little more into details:

For most of our straps we are offering CNC machined buckles.

Rounded edges on the stamped buckles are typical, it lets the buckle look "cheap" in our eyes. The CNC machined buckle have crisp edges which let them look more premium.
While rounded edges are good against sharp edges, a CNC machined buckle could sometimes feel as sharp.
The precision of the stamped buckle is lower as they are produced through heavy pressing. The CNC machined buckles are done within tolerance of few millimeter.
Stamped buckle are usually made out of 304L stainless steel, while for CNC machined buckles, we use 316L stainless steel.
Price for a stamped buckle is about USD 0.42, a machined buckle costs more than 10x and for us the average cost is about USD 7.00 per piece (including the luminous)

The future of material protection?

The future of case and bracelet scratch protection?

Scratches, this is always a problem we are trying to solve for our customers.

Especially on stainless steel or titanium cases, this can be painful. Right now, the best way is the "hardening" coating which is basically a colorless DLC coating and it can reach a hardness level of up to 1200HV. But the problem there, with time passing or after a high froce impact on the surface, the coating can spall off. So they are good in the beginning but can reduce the protection over time. We are using this type of hardening coating on our current model, the PD V1 9039.

At WICKED WATCH CO we are always seeking for the best and innovative ways to deliver a great quality for the buck. It took us some time to find new ways of protecting our cases, bracelets etc. We have found a special treatment that helps us to protect our watches.

With the new way we have found, the outcome is a significant improvement in wear and galling resistance due to a surface hardness of up to 1300HV, and typically maintained or even improved corrosion resistance.

The new technology helps to:

Replacing coatings such as hard-chrome plating for environmental and cost reasons, or PVD/DLC for cost or “line-of-sight” reasons
Replacing traditional low-temperature carburizing diffusion processes for environmental, cost, corrosion resistance or lead-time reasons
Replacing conventional heat treatment on martensitic steels to improve wear and corrosion resistance

The result of the hardening test depends on the raw material, the surface finish etc.. We made some samples and sent them to test in the lab to find out, how good is the treatment. The result are stunning, with perfectly even penetration and with a high hardness level, we are very happy with it.

We look forward using this new technology on future projects and we want to hear the feedback from our customers!

Titanium Case backs for Kickstarter

Titanium case backs

Some time back we had difficulties with our watchmaker in Switzerland, when we were making the Kickstarter orders.. And during the handling of our first watchmaker, lot of case backs had tool marks.

We then produced with the manufacturer new ones and the factory got bankrupted and we lost the money for the case backs. (like we did lost already enough because of damaged cases, hands etc from the watchmaker -.-)

Regardless, we have found another factory and they made the case backs for the owners of the STP series. During our Kickstarter and Pre order campaign we sold about 160 pcs STP versions.

Upgrade for Bronze Pearl Diver

In 2023 we are having some watch releases planned and one of them are the V1.2 of the bronze PEARL DIVER. We have finished almost all dial we made with LUMICAST and still have some cases left, this lead us to do some new excited stuff for our customers!

What is the case made of?

We are using the same cases like on our first run as they are already produced. This means a 22 mm lug size, 46 mm lug to lug and 40 mm case diameter. The height is with 13.5 mm including the sapphire crystal and domed bezel insert.

The hands and dial

The watches are available with either the old style or the new style of hands. Which has a bigger area for lume and a thinner border at the hands.

The dials are made out of different materials, such as Malachite, Aventurine and Turqouise stone, iron meteorite Aletai and a stunning fumée purple.

As requested by some of our supporters, we have added a minute track, and of course it is lumed! Minte track and hour marker both use SLN BGW9 Grade A ef, while the hour markers are applied as 3D luminescence blocks, the minute track is pad printed.

The movement

We still have more than 200x NH35A movements in stock which we bought this year and we would like to use them on the V1.2. The watch will have a ghost date position.

The strap

As strap we use a genuine leather strap with stitching on the sides. The leather of choice is the crazy horse.

Date of shipping is about April 2023, but we are trying to ship out earlier, it all depends on the dialmakers and lume application.

A story we hate to share but it is the truth

Starting a microbrand is not easy. There are many odds against you and then there are the cheaters that are after your money only.

We started our journey with the Pearl Diver last year and after some unfortunate delays, we finally delivered all pre orders this summer and we are currently selling stocks we have left..

We entrusted a supplier in Grenchen, Switzerland to assemble our watches and they were willing to help us with the many different combos that we offered to our backers, it is a nightmare to organize Back in January I finally received the watches and I was so excited to ship them out. I started QC and notice almost on each watch a flaw, be it glue on the bezels (we supplied the 3M tape, they used glue and too much), scratches on the hands and so on.. I was down on the ground and needed some time to find myself..

How could this happend in Switzerland, that's what I was thinking.. the watchmaker that assembled them was probably super drunk or something... However when we confronted them with the defects, they just play cold and said the watches are fine and QC checked from 25 cm distance, most problems could be seen from that distance... they started to blame me, that we supplied the parts in wrong packaging, we are amateur bla bla etc. which is impossible, the new watchmaker had no issue and could fix all of the problem watches.. It was obivous that they are just not able to do the job right. This story left me with damaged parts worth few thousand $, paid bills of a lousy assemble job of a couple thousands $... not counting the bills of the new watchmaker to fix the watches and re ordering the parts..

New design

Early rendering stage of an upcoming project we are working on.

The renders are not final. There will be some changes like the bezel insert engraving style, hands. Additional dials.

41 mm diameter, 46 mm lug to lug, 12.50 mm height, powered by Sellita Elab Grade SW200-1 or Soprod Newton (could not decide yet). Lugs are 20 mm. Stainless Steel 316L with experimental hardening which gives the steel a hardness of 1800-3000 HV, we will provide a test report to proof our claims, just like with the lume, we like to verify what we promise and not just blind-trust our suppliers!

Genuine Swiss Made Lumicast indices and chapter ring with highest possbile Grade of lume and some even have a lumicast dial (in the works). Hands are polished with middle chamfer. Box sapphire or maybe double domed (not decided yet). Exhibition case back.

Parts are made in Switzerland and China with final assembly and QC in Switzerland with our watchmaker in La Chaux-de-Fonds.

We ship from our Swiss Office worldwide.

This way we can offer it at an affordable price. we are aiming at $649 including shipping.

Each color will be limited to 50 pieces.

How do you like it? The project is not named yet ^^

The case, crown, bezel and case back are made of the premium material called timascus, which is a forge mix of different titanium grades and zirconium. After the material is cut with CNC machine, all parts are heated in the oven to let the texture come out of the metal and appear in silver, blue, orange tones. The dimensions are diameter with crown 42.80 mm, without crown 39.00 mm. Lug to Lug is 47 mm.

The first new model to be launched in 2022 is the timascus Basilea collection.

What is the case made of?

The hands and dial

The hands are made of brass and electro plated with the desired color. For our watches we choose either gold, black or silver. They are multifaced hands with a groove in the middle that has been treated with sandblasting technique. The chamfer and surfaces are polished the cut outs are filled with genuine Swiss SuperLuminova BGW-9 Grade A ef (highest quality possible).

The dial feature applied indices filled with SLN BGW-9 Grade A ef and an oil stamped geometric pattern.

The Sapphire

For the sapphire we decided to go with a box shape double domed sapphire with 7 layers of AR coating on the inner side. This type of sapphire gives the watch a special appearing and it looks stunning.

The movement

The heart piece of our watch is the Swiss Made premium movement Soprod M100. This thin automatic movement gives the watch a premium character and it features a custom made rotor and heated blue screws. It has 25 Jewels, 28'800 bph, 42 hours power reserve, Incablock shock system, hacking

The strap

The strap that comes with the watch is a premium Swiss made rubber strap. It is free of harmful chemicals and it comfortable on the wrist.

Our Sapphire on the SWISS MADE PEARL DIVER

100% SWISS MADE SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL

Only diamonds are harder than sapphire crystal. With a hardness level of 9 Mohs sapphire crystal is second in the ranking. Our watch crystals we use on the SWISS MADE version of our PEARL DIVER are made of synthetic sapphire, produced with the so called Verneuil-Method . ( click for more information )

The Verneuil method (or Verneuil process or Verneuil technique), also called flame fusion, was the first commercially successful method of manufacturing synthetic gemstones, developed in the late 1883 by the French chemist Auguste Verneuil. It is primarily used to produce the ruby, sapphire and padparadscha varieties of corundum, as well as the diamond simulants rutile, strontium titanate and spinel. The principle of the process involves melting a finely powdered substance using an oxyhydrogen flame, and crystallising the melted droplets into a boule. The process is considered to be the founding step of modern industrial crystal growth technology, and remains in wide use to this day. (WIKIPEDIA)

We entrusted SEBAL SA with the production of our sapphire crystal for the watches. A Swiss Company producing sapphire crystal products for various famous Swiss Brands since 1978. Their longterm experience with hard materials led us to work with them and we did not regret it. With the help of state of the art machines, they are able to work with these hard materials very precisely.

But we do not stop here. The sapphire is quite reflective because of that, we are using a premium multilayer AR-Coating called ARunic® by Econorm. Another partner with a longterm experience in the Swiss watch industry. Let us show you what this special AR-coating is delivering:

As you can see, our SWISS MADE PEARL DIVER feature a true "gem" stone in the front and it will certainly protect your watch face and thanks to the UV filter, help to keep the colors fresh like on the first day.

All these premium features are coming with a price of course. Costing about 12 times the price of an Asian made Sapphire Crystal. But we wanted to do something special for our Swiss Made model and the customer feedbacks are all very positive.

It takes lots of time to set up the right lights, focus etc.

Depending on the phots you want to take, you need to use some usefull tools, like a ruler or rubber bands.

Introducing the new release of WICKED WATCH, the steel version of our PEARL DIVER.

The watch will come with some very unique dial options such as different MOP, Meteorite, stones and more.

At launch time, the watch will be available with 2 different bracelet choices. Shown above is our custom made and designed 5L "chocolate bar" bracelet.

The second bracelet option is the beads of rice, this was our audiences first choice. So we listened to them and offering this bracelet as well.

Available from the beginning is a meteorite dial as well. Something out of the space!

As lume color/style we choose the BGW-9 Grade A ef. This pigment is the best choice for longevity and it has the beautiful blue/greenish lume.

Bringing the lume to its borders

How do you define good lume?

For us its is based on 3 main characteristics of the luminous effect:

Brightness: the lume should have a nice "glow in the dark" effect
Longevity: the lume is not effective if the glowing effect lasts for only few minutes.
Clear glow: One of the most difficult tasks was to make the lume glowing homogenously, it means there are no "shadows" visible in the night glow or color differences between dial, hands and bezel of the emission color.

On this sample you can see that the lume on the logo is of a different shade of green and the indices are a bit different from the dial. You can also see some dark spots (we call them shadows) on the lume on the bezel, logo and dial. We have checked the lume application with RC Tritec AG.

The verdict: We supplied the lume pigments for the samples in sufficient quantities to produce enough samples, yet our old supplier decided to mix our pigments with some other lume powder. All this was noticeable by the manufacturer of SLN (Swiss Super-LumiNova®).

Then somehow our trust into the factories in China has reached a point, we did not feel comfortable anymore. After other tests from different factories (about 5-6 "famous" dial factories for other Microbrands) and more negative results, it was not a hard decision anymore.

Now our dials and hands are produced with trusted partners.

How to spot "fake" Swiss Lume

I think this topic gets too less attention, probably many brand owners know it or they probably don't know, but there is a lot of cheating going on in terms of lume. Many factories promise Swiss Super-LumiNova®, but in fact using cheap products Made in China, which costs only a fraction of the real deal.

Like this they optimize their profits.

1kg of Swiss Super-LumiNova® C3 Grade A cost roughly about USD 19'000.00 meanwhile you can find the Chinese "copy" for roughly 53 USD per 1 kg .

We know it because we bought it on local markets in China out of curiosity.

At this point being said: The lume quality of the Chinese suppliers is actually not bad, they can have a pretty decent brightness and longevity of up to 8 hours. But it is not the Swiss Super-LumiNova®, if it was sold as Chinese Lume, I think there is no problem with that. But it is sold as Swiss product by the manufacturer, I think this is not fair.

Now, how do I spot it?

This is actually very hard to find out. First of all you need to know how the powders look like on day time for the 3 major pigments it is:

C3: very light green appearance

C1: white appeareance

BGW-9: white appearance

Then the night glow (so called emission color):

C3: green*

C1: green*

BGW-9: blue*

*in default, there are other emission colors available (Purple, Orange, Ultramarine, Pink, White, Yellow)

Tipp: For example if your BGW-9 lume on the watch is a bit greenish on day time, it could be an indicator that the lume may not be Swiss Super-LumiNova®. The "day" colors can vary on how the lume is applied and with what lacquer it is combined.

But there is no guarantee for this. For example the next photo:

The lume of the bezel insert on this photo is not BGW-9. We did a sample with a partner in China to see the new design of our ceramic inserts. Back in Switzerland we tested the inserts, and it was negative, not Swiss Super-LumiNova®. Eventho the day color was white, and the night glow was blue.

The only "safe" way to tell in this example is the testing by RC Tritec AG, the producer of the Swiss Super-LumiNova®. They can detect their lume pigments with Swiss precision.

If you want to be 100% sure, this is the only way and we decided to do it. Our latest PD samples were all confirmed on Swiss Super-LumiNova®.

So far about that topic, now let's change to something surprisingly.

How long does it last?

This is a question we wanted to answer ourselves too. So we sent our sample with BGW9 to RC Tritec AG and let them test the watch according to ISO 17514 standards. This test is performed for all watch or glowing parts the same way and with same conditions.

The result was mindblowing for us. More than 22 hours the lume was noticable on our watch. According to the feedback, we did a good design of our lume depots and applied enough Swiss Super-LumiNova® to reach such levels.

With this test report we confirmed our points 1 and 2 for perfect lume à la WICKED WATCH CO.

How about the third point? A clear and unified glow.

Get to know the new way of lume application

What is LUMICAST?

In short: Lumicast are high precision swiss made ceramic alike parts with luminous effect.

What is inside?

The 3D ceramic parts are 100% made of Swiss Super-LumiNova®, the choice of the Swiss watch industry for the highest possible afterglow performance.

What is Swiss Super-Luminova ® ?

For a better understanding of Lumicast, we start about the "magic" powder, it is called Swiss Super LumiNova®. RC Tritec AG has more than 80 years of experience in the field of luminous materials and produces the products in-house. The production of these materials are completey energy neutral (Solar panels and geothermal energy). Swiss Super LumiNova® is used by almost all watchmakers in Switzerlands.

SLN is:

• Aluminate, “polluted” with rare earth ions

• Very hard(Mohs hardness of 9, Diamond 10)

• Only very small amounts for the luminizing of a watch needed

• Nontoxic, non radioactive, environmental friendly

• Available in eight emission colors of Swiss Super LumiNova® available (Green, Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Purple, White, Yellow, Pink, Orange)

The lumious pigments work like small batteries. During day time they are charging with the sunlight and whenever it gets dark, they are glowing. So the more "batteries" are placed on the watch, the better performance you can achieve.

The Swiss Super-LumiNova® Grade X1 shows a performance increase of up to 60% after two hours compared to the standard grade. By using Swiss Super-LumiNova® Grade X1, the legibility according to the ISO 3157 standard will be extended by at least a factor of 1.6 on the long term.

Swiss Super-LumiNova® Grade X1 defines a new quality standard of night visibility on your watch, which has never been seen before.

The more batteries (pigments) the better performance. This was in our minds when we designed the watch. We wanted to add as much "batteries" as possible, resulting into deeper engravings on the bezel insert and the new way of Lumicast.

More "layers" or deeper engravings result in better brightness performance. But at some point, it doesn't add up anymore. The curve of luminosity vs. deposit thickness flatens with the added thickness.

Different pigments types

Swiss Super-LumiNova® is available in various pigments. Most popular ones are the C3, BGW-9 or T-C1 because they have the best brightness and afterglow performance.

What is the difference to filled indexes?

The traditional steel indexes are shaped with a hollow middle part, where the lume pigments/varnisher mixture is filled in. Untill now, this procedure had one of the best afterglow performance.

Lumicast on the other hand is one solid casted piece of ceramic. The lume pigments are filled in a silicon mould and then dried out. The higher concentration of Swiss Super-LumiNova® in these ceramic parts results in a much higher brightness than in common luminous deposits.

How does it work?

We work with the best. RC Tritec AG, the producer of the Swiss Super-LumiNova®, and Les Cadraniers De Genève, a famous dial maker from Geneva.

01 Planning

We first designed the hour marker on our dial and created the dimensions for it. Then we submitted the design to RC Tritec AG to double confirm if it possible to do.

02 Moulding

In order to produce our LUMICAST parts, we need to have a mould, this is the first step of production. This takes up to few weeks to ensure the quality.

03 Filling

Once the mould is ready, they can start to fill in the luminous pigements of our choice. In this case it is SLN C3, SLN Old Radium or BGW-9.

04 Processing

After the mould is filled with the selected pigements, they have to dry out. The result of this process is the lumed ceramic part for our dials.

05 Placing

The lumicast parts are now ready to be placed on the dials. To assure everything is well lined up, the dial maker use a so called "matrix". This way, every single part is placed with highest precision on the dial.

06 QC

Every dial will be tested for the quality of the lume, the alignment of the lumicast parts and any other flaw.

custom made strap tool

We could have added a cheap strap tool for like 0.2$ a piece and maximize our profit on the watches.

But we decided not do it. Instead we created something useful and cool looking.

The custom made strap tool is made of 316L Stainless Steel with removable tool heads made of fine steel (much harder than 316L stainless steel). For the finish we choose to go with a nice sanblasted surface. Default combo is the screw-driver and the 2 feet spring bar tool. You receive an additional screw-driver head and a pointy head for drilled lug spring bar removals.

This comfy tool allows you to change straps of most watches.

Our multifunctional tool is inspired by the traditional chinese pu'er knife, which I got to know during my trips in China and drinking tea with local friends and factory owners.

T his knife is used to break out pieces from a dried pu'er tea disk or brick, those dried teas can be 30 years old and older! I liked that tradition and the tea very much, so I wanted to convert it into modern use for our customers.

A micro comparison of different lume applications

The following comparison was made with a x400 zoom into the dials.

All lume application was done with SLN Standard Grade

The luminous pigments here were printed on the dial with one of most common techniques; SILK SCREEN PRINTING.

You can see the edges are not too even and you can see the luminous pigments (the small "pearls").

Probably the most common technique to apply luminous. Indexes are produced with different kind of meterials and then filled with the mixture of the luminous pigments and lacquer. You can also see here the single pigments.

WICKED WATCH CO. uses state of the art technologies to improve our products.

Here is the so called LUMICAST, the latest application method for luminous pigments. There is no lacquer need, these indexes are made into one solid ceramic like piece. You can see sharp egdes and the luminous pigments are not visible like on the other methods.

LUMICAST was used from famous brands like IWC and others. WICKED WATCH CO. brings this technology into the microbrand world.

Putting our watches into the right light

Our watches are finally ready and we had the chance put them into the right ligh.

Spending amazing 7 hours in the photo studio to create a very nice campaign video for Kickstarter and also the photos for the online shop and advertisment campaigns.

Its not easy to stay focused all the time so we have to take some cooridnated breaks to find back to the mojo.

Our team was great and did a really good job, but see it yourself.... :)
